Bruce Jack Breeding Bird Nest Surveys

According to the federal Canadian Migratory Bird Convention Act and the British Columbia Widlife Act  all breeding  bird nests, eggs and young require protection.  Silverwood lead the breeding bird nest surveys for this project, located north of Stewart, BC.

Silverwoods key roles in this project included:
-The Silverwood crew conducted extensive ground surveys along the transmission corridor during the 2016 bird breeding window.
-Determined nest activity and established protective buffers around active nests.
-Communicated nest locations to fallers and project personnel to maintain nest protection.
-Monitored nest sites to determine nestling activity and development stages, and identifying when nests were considered no longer active.
-Daily written report of key findings of surveys.
-Aerial and on foot raptor surveys along access roads, trails, and transmission corridor.

Value Delivered
Olive sided-flycatchers population have decreased 79% in the past 38 years.  Currently they  are Provincially ‘Blue’ listed and Federally listed as’ Threatened’ and are protected under the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA). On this project the Silverwood crew identified two Olive-sided flycatcher nests at separate project sites. Operations at both project sites were minimized and the nests were monitored. Both nest sites were successful with offspring fledging.
